    The RBMK Reactor

The Chernobyl reactor is based on technology developed in the 1950s. The reactor type is called RBMK. Not something you want as a neighbor. Unfortunately, you are a neighbor from quite far away... even in Sweden. Today there are at least twelve old RBMK reactors still operating in Russia and Lithuania. Ignalina is one of them. Pressure to shut down Ignalina has been intense, but alternatives are few. Ignalina continues operating.
